History of Third Sector Services, LLC
In 1998, Russ Cargo and
Patricia Lewis
were selected by the US State Department to present a series of
workshops to leaders of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in
Turkey and Israel. Working together, they developed a
creative and engaging team approach to teaching nonprofit
management subjects. On the flight home from Tel Aviv, they
began talking about how they could continue that productive and
rewarding work with US nonprofit organizations and they
decided to start Third Sector Services, LLC.
Pat Lewis, formerly President and CEO of
the National Society of Fund Raising Executives (NSFRE), then
joined Russ on the faculty of George Mason University where
he had begun the nonprofit management program. While there
they both were involved in the planning and start-up of the
National Center on Nonprofit Enterprise, built the academic
program and initiated some of the first online nonprofit
management courses in the country.
In 1999, Russ Cargo moved to Virginia
Commonwealth University (VCU) in Richmond, Virginia, where he started
the VCU Nonprofit Enterprise Institute. He recently has been
instrumental in forming the Virginia Network of Nonprofit
Organizations (VANNO), Virginia's new state-wide association for
nonprofits. Pat moved to Phoenix, Arizona in 2003 and is now
on the faculty of Arizona State University.
In 2005, Third Sector expanded its team
of consultants by adding Jane S. Kornblut as a principal and full
partner in the firm. Jane brings a wealth of expertise from
her experience as a senior consultant at the National Center for
Nonprofit Boards (now BoardSource), executive director of
Volunteer Fairfax, and most recently as the
nonprofit-professional-in residence at George Mason University.
